Look for ABC NO Rio on Rivington Street to be heating things up for the Rivington School this Winter. Charismatic Matthew Courtney looks like he’ll be overseeing the renaissance of this once number one art gallery. Courtney does a great job with his open mike Sunday nights (beginning at 8), and illustrates the connection between the underground poetry scene and the visual arts, a connection which is becoming more powerful. Galleries such as ABC No Rio, Fashion Moda, Now, Fusion, Pompeii, No Se No, Jim G’s Nada, Jon Gerstad, Limbo, E.M. Donahue, Bridgewater, and further afield, White Columns and Frank Bernarducci are creating events which will still be of interest 50 years from now. Unfortunately, other outstanding galleries such as A&P, Civilian Warfare, New Math, Semaphore Easy (now the new T Greathouse Gallery), and recently Tom Awning and B side have Closed.
